German textile and clothing industry: no impetus

Hardly no rising economic data in january. On the contrary: the important (early) indicators are declining. The clothing sector is particularly affected, but even textiles are not developing satisfactorily at present. This means that there are still no indications of a short-term recovery and rising economic activity. The ifo index is falling both for the manufacturing industry as a whole and for textiles and clothing.

Textile sales in January are down by a very significant -4.2 %. Clothing, on the other hand, recorded an increase in sales of +1.4 %, albeit on the basis of a low figure from the previous year. Overall, sales for the month of January fell by -2.1% year-on-year.

Sales by manufacturers of nonwovens and products made from them (excluding clothing) fell by 9.9 percent to 130 million euros in January 2019, while manufacturers of technical textiles recorded a slight increase of 1.6 percent to 228 million euros.
