Textile building: Innovations from Aachen

Technical textiles, for example made of carbon fibres, as well as semi-finished products produced from them, will also have a lasting impact on the construction industry. The innovative materials and components hold enormous potential for the industry. One of the aims of the Aachen Building Experts Association is to increase the awareness regarding this.

Aachen Innovation Network promotes knowledge transfer

"The various possibilities of textiles in the constructions sector and the high potential of technical fibres and textiles are still widely unkown in the building industry", says Goar T. Werner, Managing Director of Aachen Building Experts e. V. (ABE). Therefore, the ABE as an interdisciplinary competence network brings experts from science and industry together. It is supported by the Institute of Textile Technology and the Chair of Textile Engineering (ITA) at RWTH Aachen University.

Resource efficiency through technical textiles

Due to its corrosion resistance, textile reinforcement in concrete construction enables comparatively slim concrete components with a low dead weight to be produced. Additionally these are very load-bearing and durable. The enormous weight saving reduces transport costs and makes it possible to build higher. This saves floor space. Above that, textile concrete requires up to 80% less concrete and causes the same percentage of lower carbon dioxide emissions.

Cooperation for industry-related innovations

Dr.-Ing. Andreas Koch, Head of Construction Composites at ITA, emphasizes: "We want to create innovations that are relevant to the industry". That's why the three RWTH institutes and ABE are working together on a broad topic: "Together we cover the testing and approval of components and textile products as well as fiber and textile development. The networking in the ABE contributes to making successful innovations quickly accessible for the construction industry.
