Automatic winder for rewinding and slitting of 5 m wide geotextiles
Campen Machinery has recently installed a 5 m wide automatic winder to JUTA in the Czech Republic. The automatic winder converts big geotextile rolls (up to 2000 kg, 5,1 m working width) to short sales rolls slitted or in full width. The solution includes an in-line packaging machine with automatic adjustment to different roll lengths.
When the Czech customer approached Campen, they were in need of an automatic winder which could handle different sized rolls with a working width from 3900 mm up to 5100 mm, a diameter up to 1,5 m and weighing up to 2000kg. Even though the winder specialist has delivered a great number of customized winders for over 40 years – and several wide machines (e.g. a winder for 3,2 m working width to the same customer delivered a year ago) – this machine should become the most dynamic and flexible automatic rewinder for wide materials so far.
The construction of wide winders is a very challenging task as winders are very dynamic with aggressive ramp up and down to achieve short cycle times. The broad material, compared with sensitive and low-grammage material, is a challenge and it demands that the machine is very stable and powerful, without disturbing or stretching the material. These contradictory conditions make the construction of the machine very difficult.
The automatic winder winds geotextiles of up to 5,1 m width and winds 50 m of textiles in 45 sec. When slitted into three rolls, wound up side by side, it has an output of nearly 240 rolls/hr. The diameter of the finished rolls is 200 – 500 mm and the machine can produce either 3 short rolls (1,3 m), one long roll (5 m) or 2 medium rolls (2,5 m).
Despite the width, it is possible to wind finished rolls on a 3” paper tube. Alternatively, rolls with a diameter of 120 mm or 6” diameter can be used. This winder also has automatic center guiding which ensures straight rolls. The automatic winder can quickly switch between different working widths or with/without slitting. The machine is equipped with two unwinding units, making it possible to produce with one roll, while being able to change the other roll. The new roll is prepared with adhesive tape, and the roll change itself is automated and done in a very short time to ensure the utilization of the winder.
The unwinder is center driven, and it is made shaftless to avoid difficult handling of 5 m long and heavy expansion shafts.
The roll change for the finished roll is fully automatic with automatic feeding of empty cardboard tubes. When winding the material onto the cardboard tube, hot melt is used both at roll start and end, which ensures that the material is stuck to the cardboard tube and thereby does not unroll itself again.
The packaging machine and the automatic winder are optimized for a smooth cooperation, given that the packaging machine automatically adjusts to the diameter and length coming from the winder. Consequently, the use of plastic is limited to the amount necessary to pack the finished geotextile rolls. Furthermore, the packaging is tight and 100% water tight for outdoor storage.
