Recycling of technical fibers

The DITF have installed a nonwoven line of Dilo Machines GmbH financed by the state of Baden-Württemberg. Both the nonwoven line and the modernized pilot plant are designed in such a way that electrically conductive carbon fibers can also be processed.

Fiber composites are increasingly being used in energy-saving, lightweight vehicles. In order to be able to manufacture these in a resource-saving and cost-effective manner, the carbon fibers used should be recycled as efficiently as possible. Suitable processing technologies for recycled carbon fibers can be researched at the industrial nonwoven line.

A special feature of the new nonwovens line is that, as an alternative to the production of nonwovens, an intermediate product required for yarn production, the fiber sliver, can be produced using carding machines, cross lappers and needling machines.

Process technology
The working width of the nonwoven line is one meter and is therefore suitable for processing tests with small quantities of material (from 10 kg) as well as for system or technology component development. It consists of a bale opener with feeding table followed by a vibrating shaft feeder which separates the fiber pulp from the process air and produces a web which is fed to the carding machine. The web passes through a belt weigher before it is dissolved into individual fibers by the compact carding machine (KC11) with pre- and main tambour. The card pile produced by the carding machine is panelled off by a cross lapper (DLAK 11) and needled with the aid of a needle machine (OUG II) either from above and below, simultaneously or alternately to form a nonwoven fabric.
The crosslapper is designed to be movable by means of a rail system and can be pushed away from the card for belt production in order to make room for a belt take-off and a canstock from Rosink GmbH + Co. Maschinenfabrik at the outlet of the card. For the application areas nonwoven or fiber band, the line has a complete exchange set of worker and turner rollers with different garnishing depending on the application. The sliver production by means of carding enables, for example, the processing of long staple fiber materials and thus the research and development of natural long fibers such as flax or hemp.
