Supply industry: Current situation under pressureThe two-part picture of the business climate of the German supplier industry has further intensified. At the beginning of the second quarter, the current business situation was again rated slightly lower. At first glance, the prospects have experienced a slight upswing in April. However, a closer look reveals that expectations for the coming six months have developed heterogeneously within the supply industry. Any hasty general confidence can therefore only be met with question marks. In addition to the continuing economic downturn and the existing trade policy uncertainties, the general conditions have changed only to a small extent. Although Brexit has been postponed to October 2019, the final development remains completely open. It remains to be seen to what extent the expectations of all supplier industries will be assessed more optimistically in the coming month.
The supplier industry business climate index is determined by the supplier industry working group ArGeZ in cooperation with the Ifo-Institut, Munich. It is based on a survey of around 600 companies and covers the following sectors that are members of the supplier industry working group: foundry industry, aluminium industry, plastics processing, steel and metal processing, non-ferrous metal industry, rubber industry and technical textiles.
